On the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg was the keynote speaker at the 14th Annual Harris Center Public Forum, which benefits the Harris Center for Education and Advocacy in Eating Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital. The event was held on March 8, 2011 at Harvard Business School in Boston and was hosted by David B. Herzog, MD, the Center’s director and an endowed professor of psychiatry in the field of eating disorders at Harvard Medical School. As President of the CFDA, von Furstenberg is largely responsible for the establishment of The CFDA Health Initiative, an industry effort to promote a healthy working environment and lifestyle choices for models. Dr. Herzog is a key medical advisor to the CFDA. The day kicked off with an afternoon reception at the DVF store on Newbury Street with a percentage of sales being donated to The Harris Center. Prior to the evening event, von Furstenberg spoke intimately with teen peer educators effected by eating disorders. In her speech, von Furstenberg emphasized the important responsibility the fashion industry has in influencing the self esteem of women and its responsibility to promote “health as beauty. She believe that beauty is imperfections – that each person is beautiful for what is not perfect and that our most important relationship is with ourselves. This is the second year The CFDA Health Initiative was a topic at The Harris Center Public Forum. Last year the event panel included Michael Kors Natalia Vodianova, and Anna Wintour.
